Christian culture in the Middle East has fewer boundaries
set between men and women on a daily basis.
Men and women are free to talk in public. It seems to me that most marriage and serious
relationships begin because of family (cousins do marry each other) or through
family relationships, work, university, or church.
Once a couple meets and decides that they would like to get
to know each other more and on a deeper level, they approach their families and
work out an engagement. The engagement
is made public by a party. The period of
engagement is serious for the couple knowing that they’ve made a commitment to
lead to marriage if all works out, but it’s also a time for dating and getting
to know each other.
Depending on the community and family, the couple may have
the freedom to talk on the phone and/or meet alone or with a chaperon in
public. These engagements can last for
any amount of time, from a few months to a year or two.
Once a couple and family decide that it’s right to marry,
they will set a date and start planning.
The wedding will usually take place quickly after the final decision is
made.
