I realize that my life is very unconventional and foreign to my friends and family at home and around the world. Sometimes I forget this. Things that were once very foreign and unnatural for me have now become "normal" and "natural." The more experience I have living in different countries, the more I forget that my life can be a challenge to comprehend to my friends and family. It was this thought that made me realize that I haven't said a lot about my work, teaching English.
I work at a vocational center (pictured above) which trains and teaches local people about English, Arabic literacy, car mechanics, computers, and other vocational skills (all programs run according to local interest and teacher availability). Our primary and foundational program is our English program, but we desire to offer much more to equip and train locals to be competent in many areas. Their competency will help them to get jobs. The job market and economy here are unstable and unable to handle the population which grows exponentially - 50% of the population is under the age of 15. Vocational training can give those looking for jobs an advantage.
We at the center desire to help people to create opportunities to better their lives. These opportunities will help them to better support their families, offer services to their communities, and help those around them to also improve their situation. One of our teachers graciously took the time out of her schedule to decorate some walls in the entry way with this as a reminder for all of us.
