The Eid Al Adha Sacrifice

This cute little goat cost my landlord's family $100 which is an enormous price for a local family. On average, an individual only makes about $200 to $300 a month...if they have a job (unemployment is 35%)! They bought this goat a few days before Eid and so it got to hang out in our front yard during the day and inside the entrance to our building at night. The poor thing didn't even have enough rope to sit down so he got stand for those few days!

The landlord's kids got a kick out of having a "pet" for a few days. They took it for walks, chased it around the yard, constantly fed it to fatten it up, and roughly "played" with it when they were bored. I was almost happy that it didn't have to live to be tortured for too long by rowdy children who haven't been taught how to behave with animals.

Yesterday morning we woke up and didn't hear the goat anymore, so we figured that it had already been slaughtered. Today, we were invited upstairs to eat what was left of it. I don't think I have ever eaten goat before and I was surprised how much I liked it. It tastes much better than lamb. Typical for Eid, we ate a whole lot of food. We ate rice cooked with potatoes in it, salad, another potato dish, homemade bread, "salta" a soup like dish that you dip bread into, and of course the poor goat. For dessert, we drank tea, ate cantaloupe, chocolate, and caramels. Suffice it to say, I was very full by the end of the day, especially since I had eaten a big Thanksgiving meal a few days ago!

In addition to eating, we hung out with the kids, listened to jokes, and talked. It was a great afternoon with the family.
